Perth Places People

In 2015 Garry had a one man show at the Moores Building in Fremantle called Perth Places People. The paintings comprised individual buildings, familiar city views and genre, like beaches, performance and street events. He was interested in the idea of turning familiar places and events into paintings like Monet did with London, or Renoir about Paris. The artistic challenge was to make the familiar into aesthetically pleasing images.  Before the age of drones, Garry managed to find elevated and novel viewpoints to add to the variety of the images.

I’ve almost always lived in or near Perth. These buildings and places I’ve painted, are as much part of me as the gum trees, the sound of magpies, and the wide open river and sky. I wanted to make paintings about these things and this place and share them with other people who belong to this city.
